Why encapsulation and insulation is important!!
Challenge
This homeowner called with concerns about the crawl space sealant deteriorating. They didn't think anything had been done since it was originally built in 1983 and when they ran the sprinkler system and saturated the ground, the water would bubble up in the crawlspace causing the insulation to fall apart and the 1st floor of the home to be consistently cooler than the rest of the home.
Solution
Our solution is to encapsulate and reinsulate using polystrene foam! Separating the earth from your home is important for many reasons but water prevention is a big one. Negative effects of a wet or damp crawl space can include:
- Dust mites
- Sticking doors and windows
- Smelly damp carpets
- Condensation/rotting/mold in your attic
- Frost or condensation and mold on the inside of windows in cool weather
- Increased heating or cooling bills
- Mold upstairs
- Aggravated asthma and allergies
Water in the crawl also damages and deteriorates fiberglass insulation!! Mold can even grow on fiberglass because it has some organic material in the resin used to set the fibers which also aggravates asthma and allergies even more so plus introduces health hazards.
